Jake Owens’ film
Jake Owens is known throughout Heywood and beyond as a musician who knows how to entertain a crowd. But as a child, playing music wasn't the "cool thing" to be associated with - that is, until his uncle Ronnie started teaching him guitar at the age of 15. Suddenly, his natural talent shone through: "It went from me not liking music at all, to nothing in the world mattered apart from music - and now everyone knows me for music!"
He quickly proved wrong the early advice that "there’s no way you can make any money off music." Since the age of 16, Jake has been singing and playing in venues across the country and internationally, building a life he loves. He credits his family, his mates, and especially his uncle, whose memory he cherishes. "It's nice in a way that I'm carrying his little legacy on that he had."
Alongside his busy schedule of gigs booked up a year in advance, Jake and his long-term band member, Tom, are actively investing their experience into the next generation of musical talent in Heywood. They host a weekly open mic night that is now brimming with talent. "We’ve created this community where everybody's friends and encourage each other - there's been a band formed, two or three artists who are all doing original stuff now and their own gigs, it’s mint." says Jake.
When asked about the power of music, Jake's passion is clear: "I think it's unbelievable, you can go literally anywhere in the world and talk to somebody about music, and you might not even be able to speak the same language." This universal language has defined his life, and he continues: "I would never have experienced some of the experiences I've had without music. I’d never have met my wife, had the nice things we have, made so many great memories or made such great friendships, without music."
